A Brief History...
MiniMode is owned and primarily operated by Victoria Garnier who designs and handcrafts each jewelry piece.
Victoria has always had a restless creativity. When she was a baby, her father had a shop in Waikiki where he sold strands of sea shells the family had gathered from the shore. Her mother frequently took Vicky with her to work at the shop. When she was a little older, Vicky began playing with the surplus beads, findings and stringing materials her father would bring home and soon discovered jewelry-making was a great outlet for her creativity.
One wonderful Christmas, little Vicky ripped the gift wrap off her first Barbie doll. She fell in love immediately and every Christmas after that, she asked for another. Soon she had a nice little collection that included Malibu Barbie, Crystal Barbie, and eventually a Superstar Ken. She loved the miniature outfits and shoes but her absolute favorites were the "diamond" earrings in their plastic settings. They were too special for Barbie to wear on a regular basis--these could only be worn for special occasions. (However, loosing them in the jungle of the family's shag carpet was much cause for distress and enough to convince her that Barbie should be wearing them at all times.) Soon, Vicky began making jewelry for Barbie as well. Her first rudimentary creations were necklaces of gold and colored seed beads arranged on wire cut out from twist-ties. When the Waikiki store went out of business, however, jewelry-making was forgotten and replaced by drawing, painting and other arts and crafts. Barbie was even tossed aside for a while - but not forever!
After graduating with a degree in French and music, Vicky eventually re-discovered Barbie collecting and jewelry craft as an adult. However, it was not until she had been making jewelry for three years did it occur to her to make jewelry for Barbie. Jewelry crafting for fashion dolls began as a hobby and her first piece for Barbie was a pair of amber earrings that later would be called Amber Dew. Under the user ID, "Barbijoux," Vicky began offering her craft on eBay in February, 1999. In March, 1999, she discovered the world of the 15-1/2" doll with Ashton-Drake's "Crème de Cassis" Gene. A great love affair with the doll ensued and soon she began making jewelry for Gene. By the end of the month, "Barbijoux" was changed to "MiniMode" to accommodate an array of fashion dolls that would include Barbie, Gene and Candi. Interest in MiniMode auctions on eBay grew and in July 1999, Victoria Garnier officially started doing business as "MiniMode." |
